Hikvision AcuSense vs ColorVu: UK Installer Guide for 2026

This is a UK installer's working guide to Hikvision AcuSense vs ColorVu — what each technology actually does, when to spec one over the other, and which Netview-stocked models pair them up properly. We sell both ranges every day from our Leicester trade counter, and the choice of one over the other (or both together) drives more aftercare calls than any other camera-spec decision.
At a glance
AcuSense is a deep-learning analytics layer that filters CCTV alerts down to humans and vehicles, cutting nuisance alarms by up to 90%. It runs on the camera and on AcuSense NVRs.
ColorVu is a low-light imaging stack — F1.0/F1.2 large-aperture lens, larger sensor, optional white-light LED — that delivers full-colour video down to 0.0005 lux (ColorVu 2.0) or 0.0001 lux with HikAI-ISP on ColorVu 3.0.
They are not alternatives. AcuSense is what the camera thinks; ColorVu is what the camera sees. Modern Pro Series G3 hybrid models (e.g. DS-2CD2347G3-LI2UY, DS-2CD23166G3-I2UY) ship both in one body via Smart Hybrid Light.
Decision rule: if false alarms are the pain, lead with AcuSense. If the site has scenes you need to identify in the dark — driveways, forecourts, alleyways — lead with ColorVu. For most 2026 commercial installs, spec a Smart Hybrid model and you cover both.
What is Hikvision AcuSense?
AcuSense is Hikvision's on-camera deep-learning analytics that classify motion as person, vehicle, or other, then suppress the "other" bucket so the recorder, the NVR alarm output and the Hik-Connect push notification only fire on real targets. The marketing claim — corroborated in Hikvision's AcuSense False Alarm Reduction Application Guidance — is up to a 90% reduction in false alarms versus traditional pixel-based motion detection (source).
From an installer's perspective, AcuSense is what stops a customer ringing on Monday morning to complain that the sensor zone they painted across the side gate triggered 200 times overnight because of moths, bin lorries, and shadows from the security light. It runs locally on the camera's NPU; you do not need a Pro NVR to get the basic line-cross/intrusion classification, but pairing an AcuSense camera with a Hikvision AcuSense Pro NVR (the DS-7600/7700 NXI VPRO series in 2026) unlocks server-side functions like AcuSearch — forensic search by attribute (person/vehicle, colour, time window) across recorded footage.

What is Hikvision ColorVu?
ColorVu is Hikvision's low-light imaging technology — it delivers full-colour video 24/7, including in scenes a conventional camera would render in monochrome IR. It does this with three things working together: a large-aperture lens (F1.0 on most Pro Series ColorVu 3.0 turrets, F1.2 on some Value Series), a larger 1/1.8" or 1/1.2" CMOS sensor, and a supplementary warm-white LED that can illuminate the scene when ambient light falls below the sensor's colour threshold.
The headline spec on the latest ColorVu 3.0 Pro Series — launched late 2024 and now shipping in volume — is colour imaging down to 0.0001 lux, paired with HikAI-ISP image processing for noise reduction and colour fidelity (Hikvision UK — ColorVu). For installer reference, the DS-2CD2147G3-LIS2UY 4MP dome and DS-2CD2347G3-LI2UY 4MP turret datasheet both list 0.0005 lux without supplementary LED, 0 lux with LED on (datasheet PDF).
ColorVu does not replace IR — it adds a second imaging path. Most ColorVu Pro Series cameras ship with both warm-white LED and IR LED arrays so the camera can choose between IR-only night vision (covert, monochrome) and white-light colour mode (overt, colour) depending on the time of day or what the analytics see.
AcuSense vs ColorVu — what the difference actually means at the installer level
The clearest way to think about it: AcuSense changes which events the camera reports, ColorVu changes what the recorded footage looks like. They operate at different layers of the imaging chain and they solve different problems. The table below summarises the practical differences for a UK installer specifying a 4-16 camera commercial site in 2026.

| Aspect | AcuSense | ColorVu |
|---|---|---|
| Layer | Analytics / event classification | Optics / sensor / illumination |
| Solves | Nuisance alarms from animals, weather, foliage | Loss of detail (clothing colour, plate colour, vehicle colour) at night |
| Night vision | Mono IR (DarkFighter on G2H/G3 models) | Full colour 24/7, 0.0005-0.0001 lux |
| Object filtering | Person / vehicle / other (deep learning) | None on its own — needs AcuSense too |
| Lens | Standard F1.6-F2.0 | F1.0 (Pro G3), F1.2 (Value) |
| Visible LED | No (IR-only) | Warm-white supplementary LED |
| Combined? | Yes — G3 hybrid models (LI / SL suffix) | Yes — same models, Smart Hybrid Light |
| Typical use | Yards, fence lines, perimeter, car parks at peak hours | Forecourts, ATMs, shopfronts, driveways, alleyways |
When to spec AcuSense over ColorVu
Lead with AcuSense if the customer's main complaint is alarm fatigue. Typical sites: a builder's yard with pallets and stock visible to the road; a car-parts retailer with glass frontage and a back gate that opens onto a public footpath; a school perimeter where foxes and cats trigger old motion-detection cameras nightly; a dental practice with a side car park overlooked by trees that wave in any wind above 15 mph.
For these sites, an AcuSense + DarkFighter dome or turret without ColorVu is usually the right answer. The Hikvision Pro Series G2H range — DS-2CD2146G2H-ISU 4MP dome, DS-2CD2186G2H-ISU 8MP dome, DS-2CD2386G2H-IU 8MP turret, DS-2CD2346G2H-IU 4MP turret in black — all combine on-camera person/vehicle classification with 30 m IR for night vision. They are roughly 25-35% cheaper than the equivalent ColorVu-equipped G3 models, and on a site where the customer never reviews footage in colour because the lighting is fine during business hours and the cameras are recording-only after dark, the price gap is rarely justifiable.
For varifocal coverage where the install needs flexibility on field of view at commissioning, DS-2CD2346G3-IZ2UY 4MP motorised varifocal turret gives you AcuSense plus a 2.8-12 mm motorised lens; the DS-2CD2346G3-IZS2UY/SL strobe-and-siren version adds Live-Guard active deterrence to the same chassis.
When to spec ColorVu over AcuSense
Lead with ColorVu when colour at night is the primary evidential requirement. The classic example is a 24-hour petrol forecourt: at 03:00 you need to read the colour of the t-shirt and the colour of the car, not just see a person-shaped silhouette under IR. The same applies to ATM lobbies, late-night licensed premises, taxi ranks, and the kind of front-of-shop coverage where police are likely to ask for stills the next morning.
ColorVu Pro Series models — DS-2CD2347G3-LI2UY 4MP turret, DS-2CD2387G3-LI2UY 8MP turret, DS-2CD2147G3-LIS2UY 4MP dome, DS-2CD2187G3-LIS2UY 8MP dome — all ship with AcuSense baked in as well, so you do not actually trade analytics for imaging. What you do trade is a slight power-budget increase (warm-white LED draws roughly 4-5 W under load) and the visual presence of a white light visible on the housing — which on residential streets some neighbours will object to.
For higher-tier sites that need the best low-light performance Hikvision currently sells, the LIS2UY/SL Smart-Hybrid-Light variants — for example the DS-2CD2387G3-LIS2UY/SL 8MP Live-Guard turret — combine ColorVu with strobe, two-way audio, and an audible deterrent that fires only when AcuSense classifies the target as a human or vehicle in a defined zone.
Where Smart Hybrid Light fits — and why most 2026 commercial installs end up there
Smart Hybrid Light, introduced on ColorVu 3.0 in late 2024, lets the camera switch between IR-only mode (covert), white-light colour mode (overt), and a "smart" mode that runs IR by default and only fires the white LED when AcuSense classifies a person or vehicle in the zone (Benchmark Magazine — Hikvision Pro Series ColorVu / Super Confocal / Smart Hybrid Light).

The reason this matters for installers: smart mode is the answer to the most common objection homeowners and small-business customers raise about ColorVu — "I don't want a security light blazing all night." On a Smart Hybrid camera in smart mode the white LED is dark for ~95% of the night and only fires for the few seconds someone is genuinely on site. You get colour evidence of intruders and IR-only recording of foxes, postal deliveries, and rain.
The new 16MP and 12MP G3 turrets — DS-2CD23166G3-I2UY and DS-2CD23126G3-I2UY — extend this pattern up to ultra-high-resolution sites where you would historically have specced two cameras side-by-side to cover a large area. The DS-2CD23166G3-I2UY 16MP turret in particular is becoming a default for car-park and yard installs where one camera replaces three or four in the previous generation.
Pairing the camera with the right NVR
To get the full benefit of AcuSense (especially AcuSearch and the analytics dashboard), pair the camera with a Hikvision AcuSense Pro NVR. In 2026 that means the VPRO series:
- DS-7608NXI-I2/8P/VPRO — 8-channel AcuSense Pro NVR with 8-port PoE for small-to-medium commercial installs (8-10 cameras).
- DS-7616NXI-I2/16P/VPRO — 16-channel AcuSense Pro NVR with 16-port PoE for medium installs (12-16 cameras).
- DS-7716NXI-I4/16P/VPRO — 16-channel 4-bay HDD AcuSense Pro NVR for longer-retention sites (60-90 days at 16 × 4MP H.265+).
- DS-7732NXI-I4/16P/VPRO — 32-channel 4-bay HDD AcuSense Pro NVR for larger commercial / multi-occupancy sites.
Recording-side AcuSense is what gives the customer the workflow they actually want at incident review: open iVMS-4200, search "vehicle, white, between 02:00 and 04:00 last Tuesday", get a results grid in seconds rather than scrubbing through eight hours of timeline.
Decision matrix — the 30-second version

| Forecourt / petrol station | ColorVu (with AcuSense) | DS-2CD2347G3-LI2UY 4MP turret |
| Retail shopfront, hospitality | ColorVu Smart Hybrid | DS-2CD2387G3-LIS2UY/SL 8MP Live-Guard |
| School perimeter, vandal risk | AcuSense + IK10 dome | DS-2CD2146G2H-ISU 4MP dome |
| Residential driveway | ColorVu Smart Hybrid | DS-2CD2347G3-LI2UY 4MP turret |
| Large car park / yard (one cam covers all) | AcuSense ultra-HD | DS-2CD23166G3-I2UY 16MP turret |
| Variable scene needing zoom set on site | AcuSense varifocal | DS-2CD2346G3-IZ2UY 4MP varifocal |
Frequently asked questions
Can I retrofit AcuSense to my existing Hikvision cameras?
No — AcuSense classification runs on the camera's NPU, so you need an AcuSense-capable model. Pre-G2 Hikvision cameras (DS-2CD2x42WD, older 2x46WD) cannot be upgraded by firmware. The cheapest entry point in 2026 is the G2H range starting from the DS-2CD2146G2H-ISU 4MP dome. Camera firmware is available through our Hikvision firmware hub.
Does ColorVu work without the white LED switched on?
Yes — ColorVu cameras can deliver colour video at 0.0005 lux (Pro G3) without supplementary illumination, so long as some ambient light reaches the lens (a single street lamp, an overhead canopy light, light spill from a shopfront). Below that threshold the camera will either need the white LED enabled or will hand off to IR depending on configuration. The white LED is what makes ColorVu work in genuinely dark environments.
Will AcuSense reduce my recording bandwidth?
Indirectly, yes. Most AcuSense deployments are configured to record on event rather than continuous, with events restricted to person/vehicle classification. On a 16-camera commercial site this typically reduces 24-hour storage from 100% continuous to 8-15% triggered, which can cut the required HDD capacity by a factor of 6-12 depending on site activity.
Can I mix AcuSense and ColorVu cameras on the same NVR?
Yes, freely. The VPRO Pro NVR series treats each camera channel independently and applies AcuSense analytics on whichever channel reports them. ColorVu and non-ColorVu cameras coexist without configuration penalty.
Is AcuSense the same as the analytics in iVMS-4200?
No. iVMS-4200 is the Windows VMS client (covered in detail in our iVMS-4200 hub); AcuSense is the on-camera or NVR-side classifier whose output iVMS-4200 reads and displays. AcuSense is the producer; iVMS-4200 (and Hik-Connect, and HCP Pro) are consumers.
Is there an NDAA-compliant alternative if I cannot use Hikvision?
For NDAA Section 889-restricted sites, see our NDAA UK installer guide — Vigitron, Veracity, and Ajax product lines we stock are not on the §889 covered-equipment list. The §889 ban primarily affects US federal procurement and a small subset of UK government installs; commercial UK customers are not normally affected.
Bottom line for UK installers
If a customer asks "AcuSense or ColorVu", the correct answer in 2026 is almost always "both, and here is the model that ships them in one body." The commercial range from Hikvision has converged: the G3 Pro Series cameras combine AcuSense classification with ColorVu imaging and Smart Hybrid Light by default, and the price delta over an AcuSense-only DarkFighter G2H is modest. Save the AcuSense-only spec for budget jobs where colour-at-night is genuinely irrelevant — and reserve the LIS2UY/SL Live-Guard variants for the sites where the customer wants the camera to actively warn intruders off, not just record them.
