PD 6662:2017 is the Published Document that sets out how the European EN 50131 intruder alarm standards are applied to intruder and hold-up alarm systems (I&HAS) installed in the UK. It became effective for new installations from 1 June 2019 and folds in the UK-specific pieces the European standards do not cover — most importantly the BS 8243 methods for unsetting a system and confirming alarms on installations that request police response (NSI, PD 6662:2017 update). In practical terms: if the specification, install and configuration follow PD 6662, a compliance certificate can be issued and the system becomes eligible for a police Unique Reference Number (URN) through the monitoring route.

What do EN 50131 grades mean for an Ajax install?

EN 50131 security grades classify systems by the level of intruder skill and tooling they are designed to resist, and Grade 2 — the grade the mainstream Ajax Jeweller range is certified to — covers the typical UK domestic and small commercial risk. Can an Ajax system get police response (URN)?

Yes — since the OS Malevich 2.10 firmware update, Ajax systems can be configured to comply with PD 6662:2017, which is the compliance basis a URN application rests on (Ajax Systems, compliance announcement). The URN itself is not something a hub can grant. Under NPCC security systems policy the application is made by a recognised installer, so four boxes need ticking:

Equipment: EN 50131 Grade 2 or higher devices, PD 6662-configured.
Installer: your business is NSI or SSAIB registered for intruder alarms.
Monitoring: the hub reports to an alarm receiving centre (ARC) — Ajax connects to UK ARCs via its monitoring integrations.

Alarm confirmation: cross zones and confirmed intruder alarms

Alarm confirmation is a separate event the hub sends to the ARC and users only when a device (or devices) triggers more than once within a set time — it is the mechanism that lets police respond to confirmed alarms instead of every single activation. On Ajax you build this with alarm confirmation zones (cross zones): at least one zone must be configured, and larger sites can be divided into several zones set individually. From OS Malevich 2.21 the confirmation logic was extended further, building on the 2.8 and 2.10 implementations, and existing settings carry over on update (Ajax support). Pairing a MotionProtect U with a MotionCam U in the same space gives you sequential confirmation plus a photo series the ARC operator can act on.

Hold-up alarms: why a single panic button is not a confirmed hold-up device

Under PD 6662, a confirmed hold-up alarm needs either two different press types (short and long, in any sequence) on Ajax's DoubleButton hold-up device, two separate DoubleButtons activated within the set window, or a DoubleButton alarm combined with a tamper alarm from any security device. The hold-up confirmation timer is adjustable from 8 to 20 hours in 1-hour increments in the Ajax PRO apps. The DoubleButton communicates over Jeweller at up to 1,300 m line of sight with a pre-installed battery life of up to 5 years (Ajax support). Two-stage arming: timers and second-stage devices

Two-stage arming makes the system require a second confirmation before it sets, killing the classic false alarm where a site arms while someone is still inside. Ajax supports four methods: arming via the app with an arming delay timer of 30–60 seconds; arming with a control device followed by restoration of a second-stage detector (for example, closing the front door on a DoorProtect U); arming with two control devices; or a double press on a single SpaceControl key fob (SKU 38166). The arming completion timer runs 60–240 seconds in 5-second increments, and an opening-detector stabilisation timer of 0–5 seconds ignores residual door vibration after closing (Ajax support). Sirens such as the HomeSiren U and StreetSiren DoubleDeck beep through the countdown and flag unfinished arming when the option is enabled.

Disarming rules: the alarm transmission delay

PD 6662 disarming requires an alarm transmission delay of 0–60 seconds after the entry delay expires: the sirens sound locally, but the alarm is not yet sent to the ARC, giving the user a final window to disarm without triggering a response. One catch trips installers up: with the "Allow disarming by keypad" option enabled during that delay window, the configuration no longer complies with PD 6662 — the keypad must not be able to disarm the system before the alarm transmission delay expires (Ajax support). Disarming then happens via the app, a SpaceControl fob or a tag/pass on the KeyPad TouchScreen in line with the configured method.

The remaining checks: integrity, restoration and auto-deactivation

Three further hub features complete the PD 6662 picture, and all three live under Hub → Settings → Service in the Ajax PRO apps. System integrity check verifies detector and hub states (battery, power, lid, noise level, server and ARC connection) before every arming. Restoration after alarm blocks re-arming after a confirmed intrusion or hold-up alarm until an authorised user or engineer resets the system — set restoration on both confirmed-alarm types for compliance. Device auto-deactivation excludes a misbehaving detector automatically; to comply, its restoration timer must match the intrusion confirmation timer. Finish with the LED indication set to British disco so the hub signals alerts, malfunctions and entry/exit delays visually (Ajax support). Do I need to be NSI or SSAIB registered to get a URN on an Ajax install?

Yes. Police forces issue URNs through applications from NSI or SSAIB registered installation companies under NPCC policy. Without registration you can still install a PD 6662-configured, ARC-monitored Ajax system — it just cannot carry a police URN.
