Security Fog Systems: UR Fog Ajax Ready — The Complete UK Guide

A burglar can be in and out of a jewellery store in under two minutes — long before any siren, camera or keyholder makes a difference. A security fog system changes the maths: within seconds of the alarm confirming an intrusion, the protected room fills with a dense, harmless fog that cuts visibility to less than a metre. If they cannot see it, they cannot steal it. This guide explains how UR Fog Ajax Ready fog generators work, which kit fits which space, how the fog is triggered by an Ajax wireless alarm system, what the fog is made of, and what refills cost to run. It is written for the premises that need fog most — jewellers, high-value stockrooms and distribution stores, pharmacies, and high-end homes — and for the installers who protect them. Netview is an authorised UK stockist of the UR Fog Ajax Ready range at netviewcctv.co.uk.

At a glance

  • Fog stops theft in seconds: UR Fog generators saturate a room with dense fog — from 390 m³ in 50 seconds (Compact 390) up to 2,400 m³ in 64 seconds (Modular 800) — and UR Fog reports 97% of thefts avoided in fog-protected premises.
  • Ajax Ready out of the box: every unit ships with two Ajax relays factory-fitted, pairs wirelessly with any Ajax hub and is configured from the Ajax app. UR Fog is the only official Ajax partner for fog.
  • Three trigger modes: automatic on confirmed detection, remote after MotionCam photo verification, or manual panic activation — even when the system is disarmed.
  • Safe by design: food-grade fog fluid with non-dangerous fog certification; the fog is designed to leave stock, displays and electronics unharmed.
  • Six kits in UK stock: generator + fluid bag in one box, from the Compact 390 to the Modular 800 — with discounted trade prices for registered installers and trade accounts.

What is a security fog system?

A security fog system (also called a security smoke screen or anti-intrusion fog generator) is a device that floods a protected space with dense, non-toxic fog the moment an intrusion is confirmed, making it impossible for an intruder to see — and therefore to find, grab or carry anything. The fog is generated by rapidly heating a glycol-based fluid; it hangs in the air as a thick white blanket, then disperses naturally once the space is ventilated. Unlike sirens and cameras, which record or announce a theft while it happens, fog is an active intervention: it physically denies the intruder the ability to work. The European product standard for these devices is BS EN 50131-8, the fog-device part of the same EN 50131 family that covers intruder alarm systems (see UR Fog certificates and patents).

How does security fog stop a burglary?

It removes the one thing every burglar needs: time with eyes on the prize. Smash-and-grab raids succeed because the first minutes belong to the intruder — police response to even a confirmed alarm takes far longer than the raid itself. When a fog generator fires, visibility collapses to under a metre in seconds, disorientation is immediate, and the only rational move is to leave. UR Fog reports that 97% of thefts are avoided in premises protected by its fogging systems (UR Fog Ajax Ready). The deterrent works twice: a “protected by security fog” sticker on the door makes a professional thief pick an easier target, and the fog itself defeats the one who tries anyway.

What makes UR Fog Ajax Ready different?

UR Fog is the only official Ajax partner for fog security, and its Ajax Ready line is built for wireless integration rather than adapted to it: every Ajax Ready generator ships with two Ajax relays factory-fitted inside the unit, so it enrols into an Ajax system like any other Ajax device and is configured directly from the official Ajax app (UR Fog Ajax Ready line). There is no third-party interface box to wire, no panel integration to bodge — the fog generator becomes part of the same system as the Ajax Hub 2 Plus, detectors, keypads and sirens, sharing the same arming state, the same scenarios and the same app. The newer Ajax Ready GOLD units add maintenance alerts (fluid and service status) pushed straight to the Ajax app. For everything the Ajax platform itself can do, see our complete Ajax wireless alarm guide.

How does an Ajax alarm trigger the fog?

Three ways — and choosing the right one per site is the difference between a confident install and a false-discharge risk.

Activation modeHow it worksBest for
1. Automatic on detectionMotion or door/window opening detectors confirm an intrusion while armed; the fog fires immediately.Stockrooms, safes rooms and out-of-hours retail where nobody should ever be present.
2. Photo-verified remoteAn Ajax MotionCam (PhOD) sends a photo series on alarm; the owner or monitoring operator sees a real intruder — not a false alarm — and fires the fog remotely from the app.Jewellers and premium retail where a human check before discharge is preferred.
3. Panic / anti-robberyStaff fire the fog manually with a SpaceControl keyfob, DoubleButton or panic button — even when the system is disarmed.Daytime robbery protection at counters and tills.

All three modes are configured from the Ajax app against the relays inside the generator (UR Fog: 3 wireless activation modes). For monitored sites, pairing mode 2 with photo verification gives the monitoring station visual evidence before the fog goes off — the workflow our MotionCam photo verification guide covers in detail.

Which UR Fog Ajax Ready kit fits which space?

Size by room volume, not floor area — the figures below are UR Fog's maximum fog output per single shot and the volume held at under one metre of visibility (Modular technical specs). Every Netview kit includes the generator and its matching food-grade fluid bag in one box, so there is one SKU to order per install.

KitMax fog / shotVisibility <1 mShot timeTypical premises
Compact 390 Kit390 m³130 m³50 sKiosks, counters, home safes rooms (up to ~45 m²)
Modular 200 Kit600 m³200 m³28 sSmall shops, jewellery counters, home lounges
Modular 300 Kit900 m³300 m³40 sBoutiques, pharmacies, phone & vape stores
Modular 400 Kit1,200 m³400 m³46 sLarger retail floors, high-value stockrooms
Modular 500 Kit1,500 m³500 m³48 sShowrooms, open-plan offices, large homes
Modular 800 Kit2,400 m³800 m³64 sWarehouses, cash & carry, distribution stores

Rule of thumb: pick the unit whose visibility-under-one-metre volume comfortably exceeds the room volume (floor area × ceiling height), and step up a size where ceilings are high, the room is irregular, or stock racking splits the space. Two smaller units firing together often beat one large unit in an L-shaped floor. Browse all six kits at Security Fog Kits.

Who should fit a security fog system?

Any premises where the value that can be carried out in two minutes is high enough to hurt. In practice that means: jewellers and watch dealers (the classic smash-and-grab target — fog plus a photo-verified Ajax system is now the reference spec); high-value stockrooms holding phones, vapes, tobacco, designer goods or pharmaceuticals; pharmacies with controlled drugs cabinets; cash-handling rooms in hospitality and retail; and increasingly high-end domestic properties — a fog generator covering the master dressing room, study or safe location is one of the fastest-growing requests from prime-property owners who already run an Ajax system. Because the Ajax Ready units join the same wireless system as the house or shop alarm, adding fog to an existing Ajax installation is an upgrade, not a rebuild.

Is the fog safe — and is it legal in the UK?

Yes on both counts, with two provisos worth knowing. The fog is produced from a food-grade glycol-based fluid and UR Fog's generators carry non-dangerous fog certification (Compact 390 datasheet); it is designed to be harmless to people and pets and to disperse without damaging stock, displays or electronics. Security fog devices are legal to install in UK commercial and residential premises; BS EN 50131-8 is the recognised product standard, and good practice is to install fog as part of a compliant, confirmed-detection intruder alarm — exactly what the Ajax integration provides. The provisos: brief the site's fire-alarm provider, because a dense fog discharge can activate optical smoke detectors in the protected area (heat detectors or a monitored interface are the usual answer), and always fit the supplied warning signage — the deterrent is part of the product.

What happens after the fog fires?

The room becomes unworkable within seconds and stays that way long enough for the raid to fail; once the event is over, you ventilate the space and the fog disperses naturally, leaving the premises ready to trade. The generator then needs its fluid checked and, after a full discharge, a replacement bag fitted — a five-minute job on the Modular and Compact lines, with no pressurised cylinders involved. On Ajax Ready GOLD units, fluid and maintenance status alerts arrive directly in the Ajax app, so the system tells you when it needs attention rather than waiting for a service visit to find out.

Refills and running costs

Running costs are low because nothing is consumed until the system actually fires — standby power draw is around 30 W on the Compact 390 (datasheet). After a discharge, fit the matching food-grade fluid bag (UR Fog refills) — all four are stocked at Netview:

How is a UR Fog Ajax Ready system installed?

Six-step workflow for installing a UR Fog Ajax Ready security fog system
From survey to test shot: six steps to a right-first-time fog install.

Survey first: measure the room volume, identify the entry route and the high-value zone, and place the generator so the fog cone fires across the intruder's path to the goods — high on a wall or on the ceiling, angled at the door or the display. The Modular and Compact units mount vertically or horizontally with the optional brackets, need a fused mains spur, and carry their own backup battery (about an hour of autonomy on the Compact 390) plus roughly 20 minutes' heating time from cold before they are shot-ready (datasheet). Pair the two onboard Ajax relays with the hub, assign the trigger scenario — automatic, photo-verified or panic — test with the alarm on soak, and hand over with the warning signage fitted. Installers: the UR Fog Demo Kit (keyfob + receiver) is the easiest way to demonstrate a live shot to a prospect — one demo sells the system better than any brochure.

FAQ: security fog systems in the UK

Are security fog systems legal in the UK?
Yes. Security fog generators are legal in UK commercial and residential premises. Fit them as part of a compliant intruder alarm, use confirmed detection or photo verification to prevent false discharges, and display the supplied warning signage.

Is the fog dangerous to people, pets or stock?
No — UR Fog fluid is food-grade and the generators carry non-dangerous fog certification. The fog is designed to be harmless to people and pets and to disperse without residue on stock or electronics.

How quickly does the fog work?
Full-room saturation takes 28–64 seconds depending on model, and visibility collapses within the first few seconds of the shot — faster than an intruder can reach most stock.

Will it work with my existing Ajax alarm?
Yes. Every UR Fog Ajax Ready unit has two Ajax relays factory-fitted; it pairs wirelessly with any Ajax hub and is configured in the Ajax app alongside your existing detectors and sirens.

What size fog generator do I need?
Match the unit's visibility-under-one-metre volume to your room volume: Compact 390 for counters and small rooms up to about 45 m², Modular 200–500 for shops and showrooms, Modular 800 for warehouse-scale spaces.

Can the fog fire by accident?
Not in a properly configured system: the generator only fires on a confirmed intrusion while armed, on a deliberate remote command after MotionCam photo verification, or on a manual panic press. Test shots are programmable for commissioning.

What maintenance does a fog system need?
Very little: an annual service check, a fluid bag change after any full discharge, and battery checks with the alarm service. Ajax Ready GOLD units report fluid and maintenance status straight to the Ajax app.

Will the fog set off my fire alarm?
It can trigger optical smoke detectors in the protected room, so tell your fire-alarm provider before installation — heat detection or a monitored interface in the fog zone is the standard solution.
