'Does this HiLook camera record sound?' is one of the most common questions installers field on a quote — and the answer, on most current models, is yes. This guide explains HiLook audio cameras from an installer's point of view: which models have a built-in microphone, which add true two-way audio, how Audio over Coax (AoC) carries sound down existing coax, how active-deterrence LiveGuard cameras talk back to intruders, what recorder you need, and — importantly — the UK law on recording audio. Netview stocks the full HiLook audio range for same-day dispatch.
What this guide covers
- Most current HiLook cameras carry a built-in microphone; some add a speaker for two-way audio.
- Turbo HD cameras use Audio over Coax (AoC) — sound rides the same coax as video, with no extra cable.
- Two-way talk-back works on the Turbo HD THC-T227-LTS and IP LiveGuard IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL.
- Audio needs a compatible recorder: an AoC-capable HiLook DVR for coax, or an NVR/Hik-Connect for IP.
- UK law: the ICO treats audio as more intrusive than video — keep audio recording off by default and justify it before you enable it.

Do HiLook cameras record audio?
Yes — most current HiLook cameras have a built-in microphone, and a growing number add a speaker for two-way audio. On the Turbo HD (analogue) side, the ColorVu '-MS' turrets such as the 3K THC-T259-MS and THC-T159-MS, the 2MP THC-T229-MS and THC-T129-MS, and IR models like the 5MP THC-T250-MS and 2MP THC-T120-MS all carry a microphone. On the IP side, the Smart Hybrid '-LU' cameras such as the 2MP IPC-T229HA-LU, 4MP IPC-T249HA-LU and 5MP IPC-T250H-MU include a mic as standard. The important caveat for installers: having a microphone in the camera is only half the job — the recorder has to be set up to capture that audio, and UK data-protection rules say you should not switch it on without a reason.
Built-in mic vs two-way audio: what's the difference?
A built-in microphone is one-way (the camera listens), while two-way audio adds a speaker so an operator can also talk back. One-way audio is what most '-MS' and '-LU' HiLook cameras provide: they capture sound alongside the picture so you can hear what happened at the scene. Two-way audio models add a loudspeaker and let a user speak to whoever is on camera — live, through the Hik-Connect app — which is the basis of remote challenge and active deterrence. In the HiLook range, two-way audio is found on the Turbo HD THC-T227-LTS and on IP LiveGuard models such as the IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL and 180° panoramic IPC-T280HAD-LUF/SL. If a customer only wants evidence of what was said at the door, a mic is enough; if they want to warn people off in real time, they need two-way audio.
What is Audio over Coax (AoC) and how does it work?
Audio over Coax lets a Turbo HD camera send sound down the same coaxial cable that already carries the video, so there is no separate audio run. AoC modulates the audio signal onto the existing RG59/BNC coax, meaning video and audio travel on one cable with no extra wiring or power needed (our AoC explainer; Hikvision Turbo HD 3.0 brochure). The catch is that both ends must support it: the camera needs a built-in microphone and the DVR must have coaxial-audio decoding, which the current HiLook 'M-series' DVRs provide. This makes AoC ideal for upgrades — swap an old analogue camera for a HiLook '-MS' ColorVu model on the same coax and you gain audio without pulling a single new cable. For step-by-step set-up, Hikvision publishes a coaxial-audio preview and playback guide (Hikvision how-to).
Which HiLook Turbo HD cameras have a microphone?
HiLook's audio-equipped Turbo HD cameras are the '-MS' and '-LTS' models, all of which pair with an AoC-capable DVR. The table below lists the in-stock line-up and what each one gives you.
| Model | Resolution | Night vision | Audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| THC-T120-MS | 2MP | IR | Built-in mic (AoC) |
| THC-T129-MS | 2MP | ColorVu | Built-in mic (AoC) |
| THC-T229-MS | 2MP | ColorVu | Built-in mic (AoC) |
| THC-T250-MS | 5MP | IR | Built-in mic (AoC) |
| THC-T259-MS | 3K (5MP) | ColorVu | Built-in mic (AoC) |
| THC-T159-MS | 3K (5MP) | ColorVu | Built-in mic (AoC) |
| THC-T227-LTS | 2MP | Smart Hybrid Light | Two-way audio (mic + speaker) |
The plain IR models (THC-T120-MS, THC-T250-MS) are the value choice where colour-at-night is not needed; the ColorVu '-MS' turrets add full-colour footage after dark; and the THC-T227-LTS steps up to two-way audio and Smart Hybrid Light. For the wider analogue range, recorders and cabling, see our HiLook Turbo HD DVR & camera guide.
Two-way audio on Turbo HD: the THC-T227-LTS explained
The THC-T227-LTS is a 2MP (1920×1080) turret that puts a microphone and speaker in an analogue camera, so a user can hear and speak through the coax. Two-way audio is initiated from the Hik-Connect app using the DVR as the intermediary, with an effective talk range of up to 5 m, plus AI noise reduction and echo cancellation for clearer speech (Hikvision THC-T227-LTS spec). It also carries Smart Hybrid Light: in night mode the IR stays on until an event — motion, line-crossing or area entry — triggers the white light for full-colour capture. One installer note: because two-way audio uses the DVR as the bridge, it needs a compatible current-generation HiLook/Hikvision 'T-series' DVR, so confirm the recorder supports it before you promise talk-back on an analogue job.

Which HiLook IP cameras have audio?
On the IP side, HiLook's Smart Hybrid '-LU' cameras include a built-in microphone, and the 8MP LiveGuard models add two-way audio and a speaker. The core mic-equipped IP turrets are the 2MP IPC-T229HA-LU, 4MP IPC-T249HA-LU and 5MP IPC-T250H-MU, each carrying sound over the same Cat5e/Cat6 network cable that delivers video and PoE. Stepping up, the 8MP/4K IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL and the 180° panoramic IPC-T280HAD-LUF/SL add two-way audio for talk-back. There is even a wireless option for sites with no cable route — the 4MP Wi-Fi IPC-C340HA-D/W cube camera has audio built in. Unlike Turbo HD, IP cameras do not need an AoC-capable recorder; the audio is part of the network stream and is handled by any HiLook/Hikvision NVR or the Hik-Connect app. For the wider IP camera technologies, see our ColorVu & Smart Hybrid Light guide.
Active deterrence: LiveGuard two-way audio, strobe and siren
LiveGuard cameras combine two-way audio with a strobe light and sounder so an operator can actively warn intruders off rather than just record them. The 8MP/4K IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL is the flagship: it delivers 3840×2160 resolution on a 2.8 mm 113° lens, Smart Hybrid Light that fires white light on motion, human and vehicle detection, and built-in two-way audio that lets a user hear and speak to intruders via Hik-Connect — backed by an on-board sounder and strobe for an added deterrent (Hikvision IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL spec). In practice this turns a passive camera into a response tool: a monitored alert can trigger a live voice challenge and flashing light, which is far more effective at moving people on than a recording no one sees until the next morning. The same features carry across to the 180° IPC-T280HAD-LUF/SL for wide frontages and corners.
What recorder do you need to capture audio?
Match the recorder to the camera type: an AoC-capable HiLook DVR for Turbo HD audio, or any HiLook/Hikvision NVR for IP audio. For analogue, the HiLook 'M-series' DVRs decode Audio over Coax — the 4-channel DVR-204U-M1(E), 8-channel DVR-208U-M1(C) and 16-channel DVR-216U-M2(C) all support AoC and record up to 8MP/4K with H.265+. For IP, audio is part of the network stream, so any HiLook/Hikvision NVR captures it and you can listen live or on playback in iVMS-4200 or the Hik-Connect app. Two-way audio adds one requirement on the analogue side: the DVR must specifically support two-way audio for a camera like the THC-T227-LTS, whereas IP two-way models such as the IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL talk back through the app without any special recorder feature.
How to enable audio on a HiLook system
Audio is usually off by default and must be turned on deliberately — which also happens to be good compliance practice. On a HiLook DVR, enable the coaxial-audio (AoC) option for the relevant channel and set the recording mode to capture video and audio, then confirm the camera is a mic-equipped '-MS'/'-LTS' model (Hikvision coaxial-audio how-to). On an IP camera, enable the audio input in the camera's or NVR's configuration and select the correct encoding, then check the audio is included in the recorded substream. For two-way audio, add the device to Hik-Connect and test the talk button on the app. For the wider Hikvision audio feature set, our Hikvision Audio 2.0 guide goes deeper.

Is it legal to record audio on CCTV in the UK?
You can fit cameras with a microphone, but recording audio is treated as significantly more intrusive than video and should be left off unless you can justify it. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) advises that audio recording 'will require a much greater justification' and that you should switch off any audio-recording capability by default, only using it in exceptional circumstances — for example on a trigger — and disable independent sound recording unless its use can be clearly justified and evidenced (ICO home CCTV guidance). For businesses, that means identifying a specific need, considering less intrusive options first, documenting the justification, and telling people with clear signage that audio is being recorded (ICO CCTV & surveillance guidance). Domestic users whose cameras capture beyond their own boundary fall under UK GDPR too, and the government's domestic-CCTV guidance echoes the same caution on audio (GOV.UK domestic CCTV). The practical takeaway for installers: hand systems over with continuous audio recording disabled, and advise the customer to enable it only where they have a clear, documented reason — two-way audio used to answer a specific caller is far easier to justify than blanket recording of every conversation in earshot.
Recommended HiLook audio cameras by job
Pick the audio model to match the cabling and the customer's goal. For an analogue upgrade on existing coax, fit a ColorVu THC-T259-MS or THC-T229-MS on an AoC DVR-204U-M1(E) to add colour night-time footage and audio without re-wiring. For talk-back on coax, use the two-way THC-T227-LTS. For a new IP install, the mic-equipped 4MP IPC-T249HA-LU is a strong core camera; step up to the 8MP LiveGuard IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL where the customer wants active deterrence. And where no cable can be run, the Wi-Fi IPC-C340HA-D/W cube brings audio to awkward indoor spots. Not sure whether to go IP or analogue in the first place? Our HiLook IP vs Turbo HD guide walks through the decision.
FAQ
Do HiLook cameras have a built-in microphone?
Most current models do. The Turbo HD '-MS' cameras and IP '-LU' cameras include a microphone as standard; two-way models such as the THC-T227-LTS and IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL add a speaker as well.
What is Audio over Coax (AoC)?
AoC carries a Turbo HD camera's audio down the same coaxial cable as the video, so no separate audio cable is needed. Both the camera and the DVR must be AoC-capable (more on AoC).
Which HiLook camera has two-way audio?
The Turbo HD THC-T227-LTS and the IP IPC-T280HA-LUF/SL and IPC-T280HAD-LUF/SL offer two-way audio, letting a user hear and speak through the Hik-Connect app.
Do I need a special DVR for HiLook audio?
For Turbo HD audio, yes — you need an AoC-capable HiLook DVR such as the DVR-204U-M1(E). IP camera audio is carried over the network, so any HiLook/Hikvision NVR captures it.
Is it legal to record audio on CCTV in the UK?
You can, but the ICO treats audio as more intrusive than video and advises keeping it off by default, enabling it only with a clear, evidenced justification and signage (ICO guidance).
How far does two-way audio reach?
On the THC-T227-LTS the effective talk range is up to about 5 m, with AI noise reduction and echo cancellation for clearer speech (Hikvision spec).
