What is a Hikvision solar 4G camera, and when should you fit one?
A Hikvision solar 4G camera is a self-contained kit — camera, photovoltaic panel, lithium battery and 4G modem on one bracket assembly — that needs neither a mains feed nor a network cable. You mount it, insert a Micro SIM, power it up and add it to Hik-Connect. That is the whole install.
The economics are what sell it. Getting a mains spur and a fibre or copper drop out to a remote gate is a groundworks job: a trench, an electrician, a wayleave, sometimes a DNO application. A solar 4G camera turns that into a two-hour pole install. That is why the format has landed hardest in the four scenarios we see most from Midlands installers: farms and rural yards, construction and demolition sites where the camera moves every few months, utilities and infrastructure (pumping stations, substation compounds, water courses), and temporary deployments such as events, fly-tipping hotspots and stock compounds.
Where it is the wrong answer: anywhere you already have power and a network. If the building has a socket, a mains camera on a PoE switch will always give you higher frame rate, unlimited bandwidth and no SIM bill. Solar 4G buys you the absence of infrastructure, not better pictures.
The two generations: ColorVu Solar 4G vs the new AOV SolarVu series
Hikvision’s off-grid range now splits into a heavy-duty generation and a compact always-on generation, and they are aimed at different jobs.
The ColorVu Solar 4G kits are the ones we have shipped for years: a full-size bullet camera on a substantial panel-and-battery mast assembly, built for permanent remote installation. The AOV SolarVu series launched in 2026 as a smaller, lighter, faster-to-deploy alternative built around Hikvision’s Always On Video technology. Rather than sleeping until a PIR fires, an AOV camera records continuously — one frame every two seconds while the scene is static, jumping to 15 fps the moment a person or vehicle is detected. Hikvision puts the resulting storage footprint at roughly one thirtieth of conventional full-time recording (SecurityWorldMarket).
That distinction matters on site. A PIR-triggered solar camera has a wake-up lag, so the first second or two of an event is often missing — exactly the second that shows the plate or the face. AOV removes that gap without the power cost of true 24/7 15 fps recording.

UK trade press dates the dual-lens DS-2CFSP8-D/4G, which pairs two 4 MP sensors on a pan-tilt head, to an October 2026 launch (Benchmark). Public datasheets for the AOV models are still thin on the ground, so specify from the launched bullet and PT variants for now and treat the dual-lens as a Q4 conversation.

If a site needs a permanent, do-everything off-grid camera, this is the one we ship most. It is a 4K ColorVu bullet on an integrated solar mast assembly, and the numbers are unusually generous for the format.

All figures above are from Hikvision’s published specification for the model (Hikvision product page). Two things deserve emphasis. First, this is genuine ColorVu — F1.0 glass and white light, so you get colour at night, not monochrome IR, which is the difference between “someone in a dark coat” and “a navy Transit”. Second, that 30 kg assembled weight is not a typo: the panel, battery cage and mast are substantial. Budget for a proper pole and a two-person lift.

How long does it actually run without sun?
Read the two published autonomy figures separately, because they describe two different machines. Hikvision quotes the C36S80 battery at roughly eight days in proactive mode and eighty days in standby, measured in cloudy or rainy conditions at 25 °C. Proactive mode means the camera is awake, streaming on demand and pushing events. Standby means it is asleep between triggers.
Neither figure is a UK December figure. Two things move against you in a British winter: a low, short solar day (Leicester gets roughly eight hours of daylight around the solstice, much of it overcast) and cold, which reduces usable lithium capacity and, below −20 °C, stops charging altogether. The practical rule we give installers is to design for the deficit, not the average — assume the panel contributes very little for a fortnight in midwinter and make sure the battery bank alone covers the customer’s expected usage pattern over that window.
The lever you have is battery capacity. The DS-2FSCH30 30 Ah lithium battery is the add-on pack for the ColorVu solar kits and is the single most effective way to buy winter headroom on a site you cannot easily revisit. The other lever is behaviour: every minute of live view, every PTZ movement and every alarm push costs power. A customer who checks the app forty times a day will not see the datasheet numbers.
SIMs, data and what actually eats the allowance
The camera takes a standard Micro SIM and works on any UK network, but the tariff matters more than the operator. Three points to settle before you hand over:
- Use a data-only or roaming M2M SIM, not a phone SIM. A roaming SIM hops to whichever network is strongest at the mast, which on a rural site is frequently not the one you would have picked.
- Budget generously. A camera doing modest event push plus occasional live view will typically sit in the low single-digit gigabytes per month; heavy live viewing and cloud upload push it far higher. It is cheaper to buy headroom than to explain an overage.
- Keep the sub-stream small. Hik-Connect live view pulls the sub-stream by default. Setting it to 640 × 360 rather than something ambitious is the single biggest saving you can make on a 4G camera, and it costs you nothing in recorded quality.

Where does the footage live? On-board, ANR and 4G NVRs
There are three answers, and most decent installs use two of them.
On-board first. The C36S80 ships with 64 GB of built-in eMMC and takes a microSD card up to 256 GB. That is the primary recording location on a solar camera, because pushing continuous 4K over 4G is neither affordable nor reliable.
ANR as the safety net. Automatic Network Replenishment lets the camera record locally while the link is down and back-fill the recorder once it returns. On a rural site with patchy signal, this is the difference between a complete timeline and a set of holes.
A 4G recorder where the site has power but no broadband. This is a different problem to solar, and it deserves a different product. Where a building has a socket but no line, a DS-7604NI-K1/4P/4G(C) 4-channel 4G NVR or the 8-channel DS-7608NI-K1/8P/4G(C) gives you conventional PoE cameras, full-rate local recording and a 4G uplink purely for remote access. Sizing the disk is the usual exercise — our CCTV storage guide does the arithmetic.
A third pattern is worth knowing: mains power, no broadband, and you want ordinary IP cameras rather than a 4G NVR. Drop a Reyee RG-EW300T 4G LTE router in the cabinet and you have a normal LAN with a mobile uplink, which is often the cheapest route on a portacabin.

Mounting, siting and panel aim on a UK job
Get these five right on the day and you will not be going back.
- Aim the panel due south, tilted steeply. In the UK a steeper winter tilt (broadly 50–60° from horizontal) trades a little summer yield for meaningful winter gain, and sheds snow and leaf litter rather than collecting it.
- Survey the shade at the worst time of year, not the best. A hedge line or barn that casts nothing in June will shadow the panel all morning in December. Walk it with the low sun in mind.
- Check signal before you dig the hole. Stand at the proposed position with a handset on the intended network and check it there, at that height. Signal at the gate is not signal at the corner of the field.
- Use a mount rated for the mass and the wind. A 30 kg assembly with a large sail area on an exposed pole is a serious load. The DS-1275ZJ-SUS stainless pole mount is our standard recommendation for Hikvision pole work; on an exposed rural mast, err heavier.
- Plan the revisit. Panels get dirty, birds land on them, and lithium packs age. An annual clean-and-check visit is a legitimate, sellable service line on every solar camera you fit.
Solar 4G camera or mains plus a 4G router?
Answer three questions and the choice makes itself. Is there mains within a sensible cable run? If yes, do not buy solar — buy a normal camera and solve the connectivity separately. Will the camera move within twelve months? If yes, solar 4G wins outright, because there is nothing to reinstate. Does the customer need continuous recording rather than event clips? If yes, size the battery upward and expect to specify the extra pack.
