The Ajax DoorBell brings AI object detection and professional-grade security to the front door.

What is the Ajax DoorBell?

The Ajax DoorBell is a mains-powered outdoor video doorbell with a built-in AI processor, a PIR motion sensor and full integration into the Ajax security ecosystem. Ajax positions it within its video surveillance line alongside its cameras and NVRs, which means the doorbell is managed from the same Ajax and Ajax PRO apps installers already use for intruder systems (ajax.systems). For an installer, that is the headline: one app, one ecosystem, one handover — the doorbell becomes another device on the customer’s existing Ajax system rather than a separate consumer app the customer has to manage.

Camera and video: what does the 4 MP sensor deliver?

The DoorBell records at up to 2688 × 1520 px from a 4 MP CMOS sensor, with a 155° horizontal and 90° vertical viewing angle that captures a visitor head-to-toe plus parcels left on the step (Ajax technical specifications). HDR balances bright backgrounds against shaded porches, and smart IR illumination reaches up to 6 metres, automatically adjusting intensity so a face close to the lens is not overexposed at night. Video is encoded in H.264 and streamed over JetSparrow, Ajax’s encrypted peer-to-peer video protocol, which keeps the feed fast in the app without routing footage through third-party servers.

How does the AI object detection work?

The DoorBell combines a hardware PIR sensor with software image-frame analysis, then classifies what it sees using on-device AI into people, pets and vehicles (ajax.systems specs). In practice that means the customer gets a notification saying a person is at the door rather than a generic motion ping every time a cat crosses the drive. The PIR element covers 120° horizontally and 100° vertically out to 4 metres, with three sensitivity levels an installer or admin user can set in the Ajax apps to suit a tight terrace porch or an open driveway approach.

Why the Jeweller backup channel matters

Wi-Fi is the DoorBell’s main communication channel, but when the device is added to an Ajax hub, the proprietary Jeweller and Wings radio protocols act as a backup path for commands, events, alarms and photo verifications (ajax.systems). This is the feature that separates the DoorBell from consumer doorbells: if the router drops or the broadband fails, doorbell events still reach the system over radio. Pair it with an Ajax Hub 2 (2G), the Hub 2 (4G) with LTE backup, or the flagship Hub 2 Plus with Wi-Fi and dual SIM paths. Communication-loss detection can be set from 30 seconds on the Wi-Fi channel, so a tampered or offline doorbell is flagged quickly.

Ajax DoorBell system architecture with hub and app
Three ways to deploy the DoorBell: standalone Wi-Fi, hub-backed, or fully monitored.

Two-way audio and wired chime support

The DoorBell carries a microphone and speaker for two-way conversation, with always-active noise suppression and echo cancellation over the G.722 audio codec (ajax.systems). Ajax also ships a BellKit adapter in the box, so the DoorBell can trigger a customer’s existing wired chime — a small detail that avoids the “we can only hear it on our phones” complaint that follows many consumer doorbell installs. When a wired chime is connected, Ajax recommends a beefier supply: 12–24 V DC at 3 A or more, or 16–24 V AC at 10 VA or more.

Power and installation: what does the install actually involve?

The DoorBell is a wired device: it takes 12–24 V DC or 16–24 V AC at around 10 W, with a built-in 600 mAh Li-ion battery that keeps it running for short outages and warms the electronics in cold weather (Ajax DoorBell user manual). Ajax recommends mounting at 1.2–1.5 metres, out of direct sunlight to avoid overheating. The SmartBracket mounting panel and two wedge brackets are included for angling the view across the approach. With an IP54 rating and a −25 °C to +60 °C operating range, it handles UK weather year-round without a hood. At 145 × 47 × 34 mm and roughly 163 g it sits neatly on a standard door frame upright.

Recording and storage: where does the footage go?

Recordings can be stored on an Ajax NVR on the same network or in the Ajax Cloud Storage subscription archive, and the DoorBell also supports ONVIF Profile S (and Profile T partially) for integration into third-party VMS platforms (ajax.systems). For monitored sites, the visual-verification scenario is the standout: Ajax detectors can trigger the DoorBell to record, with the result sent straight to the mobile app or the monitoring station via PRO Desktop. An alarm from a MotionCam Outdoor on the drive can therefore arrive with doorbell footage of whoever walked up the path.

Security hardening: tamper, mTLS and Secure Boot

The DoorBell is built to alarm-industry expectations rather than smart-home ones: a tamper alarm reports removal from the SmartBracket, a holding screw secures the body, and the firmware stack uses mTLS encrypted connections, Secure Boot against firmware spoofing and signed over-the-air updates (ajax.systems). Access rights are distributed through Ajax Cloud, so there are no local passwords for an attacker to brute-force, and user permissions in the apps map cleanly onto installer, admin and end-user roles.

Ajax DoorBell vs consumer video doorbells

The short answer: the DoorBell trades battery convenience for professional reliability, backup connectivity and monitoring integration. Here is how it stacks up against a typical consumer battery doorbell.

The DoorBell comes in four RAL-matched finishes, all stocked at Netview: White (RAL 9003), Black (RAL 9005), Graphite (RAL 7024) and Grey (RAL 7004). Every unit ships with the SmartBracket mounting panel, two wedge brackets for angled mounting, the BellKit wired-chime adapter, the installation kit and a quick start guide, and carries Ajax’s 24-month warranty (ajax.systems).

Building the DoorBell into a full Ajax system

The DoorBell earns its keep when it is one device among several on a hub. A typical residential spec pairs it with a Hub 2 Plus, a KeyPad TouchScreen by the door for arming, and photo-verifying detectors such as the MotionCam Outdoor covering the drive. On larger plots, a REX 2 range extender pushes Jeweller and Wings coverage out to detached garages and gates. If you are specifying from scratch, our Build Your Ajax Alarm System configurator assembles a compatible kit in minutes, and our complete Ajax wireless alarm guide covers the wider ecosystem. For perimeter design around the doorbell, see our Ajax outdoor detectors guide, and if the job calls for a full door-entry system rather than a doorbell, compare our Hikvision video intercom guide.

FAQ: Ajax DoorBell installer questions

Does the Ajax DoorBell need an Ajax hub?
No — it works standalone over Wi-Fi with the Ajax app. Adding it to a hub unlocks the Jeweller/Wings backup channel, scenarios with detectors and professional monitoring, which is where it outperforms consumer doorbells.

Can it ring an existing wired chime?
Yes. The BellKit adapter is included in the box. Note the higher power requirement with a chime connected: 12–24 V DC at 3 A or more, or 16–24 V AC at 10 VA or more.

Is it battery powered?
No — it is a wired 12–24 V device. The built-in 600 mAh Li-ion battery only bridges short power cuts (up to about an hour) and heats the device in cold weather; there is no recharging routine for the customer.

Where is the video stored?
On an Ajax NVR on the same local network, or in the Ajax Cloud Storage subscription archive. ONVIF Profile S support also allows integration with third-party VMS platforms.

Is it weatherproof enough for UK use?
Yes. IP54-rated and tested from −25 °C to +60 °C at up to 90% humidity, it is designed for year-round outdoor use without a protective hood — just keep it out of direct sunlight.

What is the difference between the four models?
Colour only — White, Black, Graphite and Grey are otherwise identical 4 MP AI doorbells. Match the finish to the joinery and order the matching keypad colour for a tidy handover.
